looks good. now back to the desk. we begin with developing news. the u.s. coast guard is searching for two adults and two children that are missing off the coast of the san mateo county. tara. >> reporter: with each passing minute, the chances of the coast guard finding these people alive obviously diminishes. the temperature of the water where they believe they are is in the low 50s. if we take a look at the map we can zero in on where they were last seen. it was 50 miles southwest of santa cruz. a fleet of boats, helicopters and air national guard are scouring the water including two children under the age of eight. they called in arting their boat was taking on water. they did not have any life rafts or survival suits on board. within an hour they abandoned

during his final sunday mass. congress getting back to work before spending cuts begin on friday. the cuts known as the sequester would furlough more than two million federal workers. that includes food inspectors and tsa workers. you will likely pay more for beef and chicken. this is the latest budget dispute between president obama and congressional. >> i won't put all the blame on the president of the united states but the president leads. the president should be calling us over somewhere. camp david, the white house, somewhere. and us sitting down and trying to avert the cuts. >> without a compromise, defense funds and unemployment benefits will also be cut. now here in california the white house says military bases would see a $70 million cut. 130,000 fewer job seekers would

spending cuts. vice president joe biden and first lady michelle obama will also be in attendance. discussing the transition to the federal health care law is at the top of the agenda. >> when we work together democrats and republicans. north, south, east, and west we can accomplish so much more. >> governor brown also attended the governors dinner at the white house last night. president obama did not mention however spending cuts. but did say they have a lot of work that still needs to be done. new this morning the brentwood school board has announced it's seeking new leadership. this comes just two days after superintendent mil grant was placed on paid administrative leave. the board's decision to follow public outcry over the way the district handled the situation where a teacher was convicted of kicking a five-year-old autistic student back in 2010 but was allowed to continue teaching. the school board says they will

make a final decision on whether to dismiss grant at its board meeting wednesday night. that time they will also select an interim leader. this afternoon students from city college of san francisco will hold a press conference. they plan to discuss whether their demands after last years sit in was met after spending a night in the schools administrative five of the students met with the schools interim chancellors. students demands include reversing cuts to classes and staff and holding town hall style meetings with students. we are tracking over night news in roanoke park where a fire burned a vacant home. it's video you will see only on ktvu channel 2. they believe the fire started in a garage around 11:30 last night and spread to the home. you can see the huge flame there is. a lot of fire trucks as well. no one was hurt. investigators are look into the cause of the fire. eight families are out of their homes after a five story apartment building caught fire in san francisco. it happened just before noon

yesterday on golden gate in the tenderloin neighborhood. photos from a ktvu viewer shows smoke coming out of the building. two police officers in the area saw the smoke and helped residents gets out of their homes. firefighters say the fire started in a restaurant beneath the apartment. 4:35 is the time. let's check in with sal for an early look at the commute. hi sal. >> good morning. good monday morning i should say. we are doing pretty well around the bay area. let's take a look at the pictures we have on 80 westbound. it looks pretty good heading out to the mccarthur maze. no major problems if you are driving through and the traffic continues to look good. the bay bridge toll plaza. it is nice looking drive all the way into san francisco. and if you are driving this morning in san jose northbound 280 traffic absolutely light. in fact, i don't see any cars. i see maybe one car. here we go. a couple cars on the road. now 4:36 let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. another dying system moving

through. it looks like an extremely quiet week. once we get past wednesday it looks sunny and warmer. everything will be in the great lakes. it will be in the northeast. mostly sunny today. it will be sunny but there will be a few high clouds in the morning. one we get to wednesday, thursday, and friday we'll have temperatures in the 70s. mid 70s. 50 at oakland. 30s for others. it's cold for some but not too bad for others 37 temperatures pretty good spread. a little bit of a breeze holding up some. you can see that system there is not much left to it. mostly sunny. morning high clouds. breezy at times. we may not see any rain until march 5th. 50s, and 60s. some will be mid 60s. santa rosa went etch. mostly sunny. it will be nice here tuesday, and wednesday. everything turns around sunny side up and warmer. it will take us into the weekend. first lady michelle obama made a surprise appearance at last nights oscars.

jimmie johnson is the winner of this years daytona 500. johnson made a late push to pull ahead of danica patrick who made racing history as well. she became the first woman to win a pole position and lead a lap in the big race. she was among the leaders nearly an entire race before finishing eighth. yesterday's exciting finish came one day after a frightening cash. pope benedict xvi has given his final blessing before he steps down on thursday. about 100,000 people were in st. peters square. he told the crowd he would take up a life of prayer and meditation and he's not abandoning the church. pope benedict will be the first in 600 years to step down.

suggestion that its special forces carried out such crimes. last month the president met with karzai about possibly keeping about 9,000 troops in afghanistan passed the 2014 withdraw bait. transit officials say solo drivers will be able to pay to use car pool lanes on interstate 80, 580, 680 and 880 by the end of 2015. the 90 miles of express lanes will be the first phase to create a 550-mile network of car pool toll lanes. drivers who car pool will still be able to use the lanes for free. sal, you probably know more than anybody else is that because not many people are using the car pool lanes? they want to at least open them up? >> yeah. and also they want to give incentives to those other people who have the cars that are very gas efficient. it will be interesting to see what happens. good morning, everyone.

let's go out and take a look at the commute now. westbound 80 traffic is moving along pretty well as you head out to the mccarthur maze. no major problems. and visibility is good. we haven't seen any big fog problems on our cameras just yet. that could change. right now it looks pretty good. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the traffic is moving welcoming into san francisco. and if you are driving in san jose northbound 280 traffic off to a good start. let's go to steve. thank you. a very, very weak system brushing us with a few high clouds. there is a few patches of fog. by the way the full moon is today. around 12:26 today. full moon should be easy to see. mostly sunny on monday. here it's a dry pattern. hate to say it last week of february there will not be any rain. once we get to midweek and thursday and friday low to mid 70s on the high side. it will be very mild to warm here. very active and rainy. but 30s and 40s to 50s. a little bit of a breeze for some. a lot of 30s inland.

up to 15 inches of know. new snow over parts of texas and kansas. thus is what it looked like in colorado when the storm forced 200 flight cancellations in and out of denver. meteorologists say the latest storm could also trigger tornadoes in louisiana, mississippi, and alabama. time now 4:51. new details about the arrest of east bay rapper mc hammer. dublin police issued a statement saying it began as a traffic stop thursday because the car he was driving had expired registration. he also refused to exit the vehicle. after a short argument he finally got out. mc hammer claims the officer is guilty of racial profiling. fremont police have arrest hand and woman on the suspicion of carjacking. it comes after a short chase that ended at the union landing shopping center with several cars hit and one person was injured. a person inside one of the hit cars was taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening

injuries. peninsula assemblyman jerry hill is introducing new legislation today. now he says the bill was drafted after the agency temporarily suspended public hearings into the deadly gas pipeline explosion in san bruno. the bill calls for state auditors to look into how the cpuc manages certain accounts for pg&e and other power companies. next month a state legislative committee will hold hearings into potential flaws. tonight the menlo park planning commission will consider allowing changes to facebook's west campus expansion plan. buildings on the second campus have a height restriction of 35 feet. but facebook's plan all calls -- plan calls for offices on top of a parking structure. they are concerned about construction noise and increased traffic. the san francisco police commission is studying whether police should be armed with tasers. the commission just held three

public forums to get feed back on the issue. they have asked the commission to carry tasers or stun guns. opponents say tasers can cause serious injuries or death and have caused agencies millions of dollars in lawsuits. thousands of parolees are removing their court ordered gps monitoring. but there is little risk they will be sent back to prison due to over crowding. they are cutting off tracking devices because they are often freed within days or hours after being arrested for violating parole. californians voted in 'twixt to require a high risk sex offenders to be tracked for life with gps monitors. it's coming closer to 5:00. let's check in with sal. how does it look? >> it looks pretty good. right now we are looking at the commute that looks nice if you are driving in san francisco. along northbound 101 it's a nice looking drive. all the way up to the downtown area with no major problems
